Northwest Transmission Study: 60,000 Jobs at Stake

Up to 60,000 new jobs annually and $55-85 billion in economic activity could be lost if new high-voltage electric transmission lines are not built, according to a report released last Wednesday by the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The report was sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Economic Region’s (PNWER) Energy Horizon Project, funded by a U.S. Department of Energy grant. INL recommendations include a call for a study of the region’s natural gas transmission pipeline capacity.

Throughput Blues Spur Nicor Decoupling Request

Nicor Gas is pursuing a rate hike at the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) that would raise about $140 million annually from business and residential customers. The company also is proposing a decoupling mechanism to preserve revenue in the face of declining gas consumption.

Chuck Eaton has begun a one-year term as chairman of the Georgia Public Service Commission. The chairmanship is rotated annually among the five commissioners. Eaton is in the second year of his first six-year term on the commission. He was elected in December 2006. Commissioner Doug Everett will serve as vice chairman. Commissioner Robert B. Baker Jr. will chair the energy committee.
