Illinois Lawmakers Rally for FutureGen, Blast Bodman

Following the Department of Energy’s (DOE) surprise FutureGen project restructuring that aims to cancel the government funding and support of the proposed Mattoon, IL, project, Illinois lawmakers — feeling like the rug was pulled out from underneath the state — came together from both sides of the aisle to inform President Bush that they have lost confidence in Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman and hope that the president will move forward with the FutureGen program as planned.

Leading Oregon LNG Project Can Win Race, Proponent Says

Although it is not a well known name in the energy industry, NorthernStar Natural Gas Inc. aims to be recognizable by the time in 2010 when it opens its proposed Bradwood Landing liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminal on the Oregon side upriver about 40 miles from the mouth of the Columbia River at the Pacific Ocean-hugging town of Astoria, OR. The next step is a completed draft environmental impact report (EIR) or an announcement on a major source of LNG in the next two to three months, said Gary Coppedge the firm’s president, during an interview with NGI late Thursday.

Preliminary Decision Aims to Keep Sage Grouse Off of Endangered List

Following news that biologists at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service are recommending a “not warranted” for protection listing for the greater sage grouse, it appears that natural gas producers might be able to breathe a little easier about their activities in the West. An alliance group fighting to keep the bird off of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) protection list labeled the decision — if it becomes final — as “the biggest win the West has seen in decades.”
