Adding more credibility to the view that the psychological $8 level could be a top, bullish natural gas futures traders on Friday were unable to push the March contract above $7.920 during a quiet, week-ending trading session. The prompt month traded a slim 11-cent range from $7.810 to $7.920 before calling it a week at $7.827, down 4.4 cents on the day but 35.1 cents higher than the previous Friday’s close.

Adding to a busy week for the New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex) that included new product offerings (see Daily GPI, Dec. 21) and accusations of merger interference (see Daily GPI, Dec. 22), as well as grumblings surrounding its scaled-down 2007 holiday schedule (see Daily GPI, Dec.21), the exchange reported Thursday that it will launch its first energy index futures contract, 3-2-1 Plus as part of the Nymex iPort suite of index futures contracts beginning on Jan. 21 for trade date Jan. 22.

Adding to its stable of production plays, Denver-based PRB Energy Inc. said it is acquiring 13 natural gas wells and 330,000 net acres in the Denver-Julesburg Basin of northeastern Colorado and southwestern Nebraska. Terms of the deal and the seller’s identity were not disclosed.

SCPPA Expands TX Gas Buy, Taps Goldman Sachs for Pre-Pay Deals
Southern California Public Power Authority (SCPPA) is expanding its gas-buying efforts for some of its municipal utility members, adding to a previously announced purchase of Barnett Shale reserves. It also has tapped Goldman Sachs to handle massive pre-payment of future gas supplies stretching over the next 20 to 30 years. Neither contract is a done deal yet, but both should be wrapped up by early next year, an SCPPA official said last Monday.

The predicted shakeout of Gulf Coast/Gulf of Mexico liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects is well under way, with ConocoPhillips adding its Beacon Port Clean Energy terminal offshore Louisiana to a growing list of projects that have been mothballed or canceled in recent weeks. Beacon Port’s demise follows ConocoPhillips’ other offshore LNG project, Compass Port, ExxonMobil’s Pearl Crossing, BP’s Bay Crossing/Pelican Island project onshore Texas and several others.
