Columbia Accepts Defeat After Dominion Ups Ante for CNG

Columbia Energy has accepted defeat in the three-month battlewith Dominion Resources for a merger with Consolidated Natural Gas.Columbia officially withdrew its $6.7 billion offer late Tuesdayfollowing a sweetened merger bid by Virginia Power parent Dominionset at $6.4 billion and the CNG board’s unanimous approval of arevised agreement with Dominion.

Southwest Accepts Oneok’s Offer

Oneok increased its offer to acquire Southwest Gas by $1.50Monday, winning the Southwest Gas board of directors’ approval anddefeating an unsolicited bid from Austin, TX-based Southern UnionCo. The new monetary total of the merger is $1.8 billion or$30/share of common Southwest Gas stock. Southern Union had acompeting, unsolicited bid for Southwest of $32/share on the table,but Southwest had reservations concerning Southern Union’stimetable for the deal’s completion.

Alliance Accepts Terms of FERC Certificate

Alliance Pipeline said yesterday it will accept the terms of thecertificate order handed down by FERC last week and, pendingCanadian regulatory approval, plans to begin construction on its1,900-mile pipeline system next May with service by 4Q2000.
