AEP ‘Surprised’ by CFTC Lawsuit on False Price Reporting Charges

American Electric Power (AEP) said last week that it has been cooperating with investigations by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and was “surprised” to learn the CFTC had filed a $300 million civil lawsuit against it and its subsidiary AEP Energy Services, Inc. (AEPES) for false reporting of natural gas trades to index publishers.

Analysts: Alberta Gas Shut-Ins Have Minimal Impact

The impact of Alberta’s crude bitumen conservation policy on natural gas production and the gas companies operating in the shut-in area has been minimal, said Lehman Brothers analysts Thomas Driscoll and Phillip Skolnick. Only about 95 MMcf/d out of a possible 232 MMcf/d of Alberta gas production has been shut in on an interim basis as a result of the policy handed down this summer by the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB).

Subsidized Alaska Pipe Could Cost Lower 48 Producers $60 Billion, Doesn’t Solve Gas Crisis

A subsidized natural gas pipeline from Alaska would be practically a cost/benefit wash for U.S. consumer/taxpayers, but would cost lower 48 producers $60 billion, according to analysis of pending energy legislation by the Energy Department. Meanwhile, industrial consumers last week charged that the bill completely misses the point of how to serve the nation’s need for natural gas.

GOP Offers Hodgepodge of Incentives for Producers, Pipes and LNG Facilities

House-Senate Republican negotiators championed more deep-water natural gas production in the Gulf of Mexico, faster permitting for producers, an inventory of Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) oil and gas resources, accelerated development of gas pipeline and liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities and construction of an Alaska pipeline in “discussion drafts” of comprehensive energy legislation released last week. They also called for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to be opened to oil and gas drilling.
