Will the South Atlantic region be the next ‘California 1992’ or ‘California 2000?’ That’s the question Arlington, VA-based consulting firm Energy and Environmental Analysis Inc.(EEA) asked in its July Monthly Gas Update because of all the pipeline expansions planned for the region and the current financial turmoil affecting the companies who are behind the new projects.

While some experts expect the economic slowdown to shave significant gas demand from the market this winter, Raymond James & Associates believes there will be a substantial shift toward greater year-over-year gas demand comparisons by mid-December. The investment bank said that high prices last winter drove about 8-10 Bcf/d of demand out of the market in the first quarter of 2001. At least half of that demand should be back by the first quarter of 2002, it said.

Apache Corp. reported that Jon W. Sauer has been promoted to vice president-tax. Sauer joined Apache as manager of tax in August 1992. He was promoted to director in 1997. Prior to joining Apache, he was tax manager at Swift Energy Co.

The Gas Research Institute re-elected Robert Catell, CEO ofKeyspan, as chairman of the Institute’s board of directors. Hejoined the board in 1992. It will be Catell’s second one-year termas chairman. Stanley Horton, CEO of Enron Gas Pipeline Group, wasrenamed vice chairman.
