Schlumberger Ltd. is collaborating with two technology wizards to push digital transformation across the natural gas and oil industry.
The joint initiative with IBM and Red Hat would provide global access to Schlumberger’s exploration and production (E&P) cloud-based environment and cognitive applications. The world’s No. 1 oilfield services (OFS) provider offers technology for reservoir characterization, drilling, production and processing.
Data is considered by many to be the world’s most valuable resource, giving the oil and gas industry more precise information to create better wells and safer operations.
Schumberger’s cloud-based Delfi environment would be integrated with IBM and Red Hat systems. Delfi is a cognitive application that harnesses data, scientific knowledge and domain expertise to work across the E&P value chain.
The Schlumberger system would be combined with IBM’s hybrid cloud technology built on the Red Hat OpenShift container platform to create an open platform.
The collaboration is designed to give more E&Ps and suppliers the ability to use the platform to “write once and run everywhere,” according to Schlumberger.
“By expanding market access to the Delfi environment, we take a major step forward on the journey to establishing the open and flexible digital environment our industry needs,” said Schlumberger CEO Olivier Le Peuch. “Our collaboration with IBM and Red Hat complements our established digital partnerships…to overcome our customers’ challenges. Together, we are enabling seamless access to a hybrid cloud platform in all countries across the globe for deployment in any basin, for any operator.”
Red Hat CEO Paul Cormier noted the energy industry was “transforming as organizations look for efficient new ways to power their operations, adopt digital technologies to create a competitive advantage, and innovate and integrate workflows to make faster and better decisions.”
Schlumberger, IBM and Red Hat earlier piloted a hybrid cloud deployment to test the flexibility and portability for compute, storage and data-intensive exploration and field development applications.
Evercore ISI analysts said the collaboration would enable Schlumberger “to deploy for every customer in every basin using a range of cloud platforms, in-country cloud or hybrid cloud. This makes DELFI the first ever private and public cloud portable digital environment for all domains across the E&P lifecycle.”
Although the “digital journey” for the OFS sector still is in its infancy, “alliances like this one demonstrate the growing importance,” Evercore analysts said. “The energy industry is one of the biggest generators of data given the long history of drilling. The big focus will be on how the industry converts all of this data to information and then to timely decisions that can drive value.”
