The NFL’s Houston Texans have signed up a unit of Occidental Petroleum Corp. to tackle and bring down carbon emissions for the team’s air travel over the next three seasons.

Occidental Petroleum

Oxy, as it is known, said subsidiary 1PointFive clinched an agreement and sponsorship with the team to help defray carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for air travel to regular season away games.

The Texans agreed to purchase the CO2 removal credits from 1PointFive’s first direct air capture (DAC) plant. The DAC-1 facility, under construction in the Permian Basin of West Texas, is set to ramp up in late 2024. DAC captures and removes CO2 directly from the atmosphere, with the emissions reused or stored deep underground in geologic formations.
