“Everyone is talking about nearshoring and a key issue to take advantage of this historic opportunity for Mexico is that we’re going to need more electricity, and with it, more natural gas,” Guillermo García Alcocer, former chair of Mexico’s Comisión Reguladora de Energía (CRE) told NGI’s Mexico GPI. “The current electricity matrix is powered some 60% by natural gas,” he added.

García Alcocer is a seasoned industry expert and academic with more than 30 years of experience in energy and finance. Since 2019, he has been at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM), one of Mexico’s top-ranked universities, where he works as the Vice President of Planning, as well as a professor of Economics and Economic Regulation.
