Mexico’s natural gas market is still in its early stages and suffers from a lack of competition, but that’s not too far from how things were in the United States when the market started, according to Mercuria Energy Co.’s Charles Blanchard.

Blanchard, head of North American natural gas research, recently published an exhaustive study on the history of natural gas in the United States called, “The Extraction State.” He spoke to NGI about the book, published by the University of Pittsburgh Press, in the latest episode of NGI’s Hub & Flow podcast.

The natural gas market in the United States took more than 140 years to get to where it is today, as Blanchard said in his book, so Mexico has the advantage that it can learn from its neighbor’s ups and downs.
