Mexico’s reliance on imported U.S. natural gas to keep its lights on and industry running was spotlighted this week, but in the end fears of weather-related disruptions proved overblown.

Pipeline operator Cenagas and power operator Cenace both had issued statements following frigid temperatures that warned of possible disruptions to Mexico natural gas flows. Mexico imports 70-80% of its natural gas needs from the United States, principally from Texas.

As freezing weather descended into Mexico Monday morning, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said, “We are in a situation of some emergency but acting in a preventative manner… because of the winter storms in the United States that affect the production and distribution of gas.
