Rising demand for industrial park acreage in Mexico will require a sizable increase in power generation capacity, with natural gas-fired plants playing a starring role, industry leaders said during the Energy Associations Congress in Mexico City. 

An estimated 2.3 GW of capacity will be needed by next year as a record number of international companies invest in the country as a part of the nearshoring boom, Claudia Esteves, executive director of the Mexican Association of Industrial Parks (AMPIP), said at the event.

Nearshoring refers to the trend of large companies moving their production processes closer to home in order to mitigate supply chain interruptions, and to take advantage of economic integration and free trade agreements with friendly neighbors.
