Enbridge Inc. has requested a U.S. district court step in to prevent Michigan authorities from reviving a lawsuit that sought to shut down its international 540,000 b/d Line 5 oil pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac.

After losing one legal battle, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she wanted to resuscitate a state court lawsuit to shutter the pipeline. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel was directed to reactivate the paused June 2019 action.

However, Calgary-based Enbridge has asked a federal court for “removal” of the state lawsuit.
