Dominion Energy Inc. has revamped plans to add 1,000 MW of natural gas peaking capacity in Virginia to support reliable energy generation.

The Richmond, VA-based utility plans to construct the Chesterfield Energy Reliability Center with four 250-MW natural gas-fired turbines. The center would be used as backup generation when other resources are unavailable or insufficient.

The facility was initially announced in 2019, spokesperson Jeremy Slayton told NGI. However, the “Virginia Clean Economy Act (VCEA) became law in 2020, he noted. Dominion then “ramped up our development of solar, offshore wind and energy storage to allow us to meet the requirements of the VCEA.”
