Colorado failed to follow regulator requirements for natural gas pipeline safety between 2017 and 2022, according to the State Auditor.

“Overall, we found that the program has not consistently complied with federal and state requirements for conducting operator inspections and documenting the results,” the Office of the State Auditor reported last month. 

Several key issues were found in the Colorado’s Gas Pipeline Safety Program, including:

  • Misreported number of pipeline incidents;
  • Missing or incomplete inspector records;
  • Program inspectors lacking sufficient training; and 
  • Lack of enforced safety requirements, with a 94% noncompliance rate.
