The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported a 90 Bcf injection into natural gas storage for the week ending May 27, a larger-than-expected figure that sent futures tumbling.

The July Nymex gas futures contract, up more than 20.0 cents day/day at $8.914/MMBtu in the minutes leading up to the EIA’s 10:30 a.m. ET report, quickly plunged to $8.793 as the print hit the screen. By 11 a.m., the prompt month was down to $8.435, off 26.1 cents from Thursday’s close.

“It doesn’t take a lot these days to make a 20-cent move,” said The Desk’s Het Shah, managing director, on the online chat Enelyst.
