A trio of natural gas sector participants on Wednesday called for the opening of capacity and increased flexibility in the Mexican market.

Speaking at the Mexico Gas Summit hosted by Industry Exchange LLC in San Antonio, TX, Royal Dutch Shell plc’s Alejandro Reyes said “the pipelines are there, but we can’t fully utilize or optimize the network. We need capacity.” Reyes is the general manager for gas and power in Shell’s Mexico division.

Mexico has 14 Bcf/d of total import capacity from the United States, more than double current cross-border flows. NGI’s 10-day average for Mexico imports of U.S. gas through Thursday was 6.47 Bcf/d.
