South Africa-based Sasol and INEOS Olefins & Polymers USA plan a joint venture (JV) to manufacture 470 kilotons/year of bimodal high density polyethylene (HDPE), which would expand “on our greater North American strategy and will complement the products produced from the ethane cracker and derivatives project in southwest Louisiana [see Daily GPI, Dec. 4, 2012],” said Sasol’s Andre de Ruyter, senior group executive for global chemicals and North American operations. The JV “demonstrates INEOS’s continued commitment to the HDPE market and to growing end-use applications that benefit from bimodal technology,” said INEOS’s Dennis Seith, CEO of INEOS Olefins & Polymers USA. A final investment decision is expected in the first half of 2014 with start-up expected by the end of 2015.
