Three prominent oil and natural gas industry associations are calling on their member companies to adopt more rigorous and uniform standards to communicate their efforts to combat climate change to ensure access to capital from an increasingly climate-conscious financial sector.

The world is heading toward a 3.2 degrees C increase in global temperatures over pre-industrial levels, which could lead to wide ranging and “more destructive” climate impacts, according to the United Nations (UN).

Two Northern California counties and a Southern California coastal city on Monday sued 37 oil and natural gas and coal companies, alleging they have known for half a century that their production was contributing to climate change, including devastating impacts from coastal flooding.

ExxonMobil Corp.’s dispute with state attorneys general into the company’s climate change research is heating up, with a North Texas district court now holding a key in how the case moves forward. At the same time an industry group has charged the attorneys general coalition is politically directed at furthering the Obama administration’s climate change initiative.
