Bearish Storage Injection, Record Production Snag Rug From Under NatGas Forwards

Despite a decidedly bullish start to the week thanks to strong cash markets, natural gas forward prices for October ultimately dropped an average 10 cents from Sept. 15 to 21 as a bearish storage injection and record production put the prompt month under heavy selling pressure, according to NGI’s Forward Look.

Plump Storage Injection Too Little Too Late to Stop NatGas Forwards Rally

Natural gas forward prices for October rose an average 17 cents from Sept. 8-14 as weather forecasts called for warmer-than-normal temperatures to finish out the month, according to NGI’s Forward Look. But the market’s realization that demand destruction caused by Hurricane Irma may have been overestimated also weighed on forwards this week.

NGI's Natural Gas Forward Basis Prices are based on indicative data obtained from traders, exchanges and deals provided by energy companies. "Fixed Price" represent the forward prices of natural gas delivered for each reference period at the various locations/hubs. "Basis Price" represent the differential, for each reference period, between the Henry Hub and various locations/hubs. The Summer and Winter prices are simple averages of Apr-Oct (7 months) and Nov-Mar (5 months) respectively. "Bal Smr" and "Bal Wtr" prices represent simple averages of the remaining months in those seasonal strips (after at least one month has passed). For daily updates of these natural gas forward basis data in monthly bullets going out 5 years, contact sales at info@natgasintel.com.
