Existing, Predicted Cold Yields Flat to Mildly Higher Prices

Despite softer futures and continued relatively mild late-January weather outside the West and Upper Plains, prices either leveled off around flat or registered small gains nearly across the board Monday. Most of the larger increases of about a nickel occurred on Midcontinent and Rockies/Pacific Northwest pipes, because that’s where the worst winter weather was concentrated.

GA Bankruptcy Hearing Yields Temporary Solution

Friday represented the eye of the storm for Georgia’s gas industry,as Atlanta Gas Light (AGL), the state’s largest distributor, andPeachtree Natural Gas, the bankrupt supplier to 177,000 gas customers,brokered an interim solution to their problems at a federal bankruptcycourt hearing. The hearing was a result of an earlier AGL filing withthe court, seeking to distribute Peachtree’s customers to other, “morecreditworthy” suppliers (see Daily GPI, Oct29).

Increased Activity Yields Same Result as Futures Slip Again

After being limited to a moribund 2.5-cent range Wednesday, theMarch futures contract snapped back to life yesterday as bulls andbears took turns exerting their influence on the market, which ledto a 7.5-cent trading range. Thursday’s 3-cent setback andsubsequent $1.746 settle would be considered an almost non-eventamid typical winter volatility, but the move was a welcome changeto traders who have grown weary of the slight moves and tighttrading ranges over the past month. Those traders reactedaccordingly, burgeoning estimated volume to 86,227.

Duke’s Diversity Yields Better Earnings

Duke Energy credited a diverse portfolio for insulating it fromthe energy industry’s downturn. The company reported 1998 thirdquarter basic earnings of $1.18/share, up 42% from 83 cents/sharefor the same quarter in 1997. Duke posted earnings of $423.8million for the third quarter, compared to $298.4 million for thesame quarter in 1997. Overall earnings before interest and taxes(EBIT) for the third quarter of 1998 was $870.9 million versus$632.2 million for the third quarter of 1997.

Nymex Yields Gains-Before, After Final Bell

The futures market shrugged off another bearish AGA storagereport and quietly traded higher at Nymex Thursday. After testingsupport in the $1.88-89 span early, the September contractrebounded to the mid-$1.90s where it remained in afternoon trade.The prompt month settled at $1.953, up 3.6 cents on the day.

Profit Taking Yields Large Nymex Price Declines

Swelling open interest and large long positions held byspeculators finally caught up with the May Nymex contract onMonday, as the spot month torpedoed 17.8 cents lower to close theday at $2.479. In so doing, the contract easily broke below the uptrendline that was lending major support in the $2.51-53 area. “Ifeel like I’ve been kicked in the face,” one source said.
