CEC Gives Initial OK to Hydrogen, Carbon Capture Project

Already winning state utility support and approval as a three-phase research effort, a 250 MW Hydrogen Energy California (HECA) project won an initial thumbs up from the California Energy Commission (CEC) staff in the first of a two-part preliminary assessment released Tuesday. The project that enjoys backing from some global energy giants is slated for a site near the oil/gas fields of the southern end of California’s central valley near Bakersfield.

Obama Picks Nobel Prize-Winning Physicist to Head DOE

President-elect Barack Obama has picked Nobel Prize-winning physicist Steven Chu, who runs the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory at the University of California, to be secretary of the Department of Energy (DOE) in his administration, and has selected experienced regulators to oversee three other offices dealing with energy, environmental and climate-change issues, Washington sources said. No formal announcement had been issued Thursday morning.

Oregon Land-Use Board Remands County Jordan Cove LNG Permit

The Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals (LUBA) last Tuesday remanded to Coos County its permit for the development of the Jordan Cove LNG project and related interstate-connecting pipeline. The county now has the option of revising the permit in an effort to gain approval from the appeals board.
