Sempra Energy’s Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) has named Dennis Arriola as president and COO to fill the vacancy created when Anne Shen-Smith was named chair and CEO. SoCalGas Chairman and CEO Michael Allman resigned in June. Arriola returns after spending 14 years at the company and at Sempra; most recently he was CFO of San Jose, CA-based SunPower Corp. Between 1994-2008 Arriola had a variety of leadership positions at SoCalGas and related companies, the last as CFO of SoCalGas and Sempra’s San Diego Gas and Electric Co. Arriola has an MBA from Harvard and an undergraduate degree in economics from Stanford.

Experts Disagree On Link Between Fracking, Quakes

The number of “felt” manmade earthquakes induced by hydraulic fracturing (fracking) in oil and natural gas operations is negligible, the chair of a major report on seismicity activity told a Senate panel Tuesday. However the disposal of the water associated with fracking of shale gas wells is linked to increased quake activity, an official with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Shell, Truck Fueler Strike LNG Deal

The concept of a national highway for natural gas-fueled long-haul trucks received some roadside assistance Thursday when Shell Oil Co. and major truck stop operator TravelCenters of America LLC (TA) announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for Shell to provide liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the fueling station operator for sale to heavy-duty truck operators.

Opponents of Arkansas Tax Hike Lining Up

A ballot initiative to raise the Arkansas severance tax on natural gas production being promoted by former gas industry executive Sheffield Nelson recently drew a few more foes, according to the energy industry-backed anti-tax group Arkansans for Jobs & Affordable Energy (AJAE). The Association of Arkansas Counties (AAC), the Poultry Federation and the Northwest Arkansas Council recently signed on in opposition to the tax hike on producers. “…[O]ur association believes a natural gas severance tax increase would be harmful for Arkansas counties and for Arkansans,” said Chris Villines, executive director of the AAC.

Oneok Entering Crude Transport With Bakken Pipeline

Oneok Partners LP plans to invest $1.5-1.8 billion to build a 1,300-mile crude oil pipeline with capacity to transport 200,000 b/d of light sweet crude from the Bakken Shale in the Williston Basin in North Dakota to the Cushing, OK, crude oil market hub, the partnership said Monday.
