Newport Beach, CA-based Clean Energy Fuels Corp. won a five-year contract to supply its renewable natural gas (RNG) product, Redeem, to the City of Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus (BBB) system in Southern California.

There is more variety on the horizon for natural gas vehicles (NGV) based on recent announcements by Westport Innovations and Volvo in providing compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) products.

Natural gas vehicle (NGV) engine manufacturer Cummins Westport Inc. of Vancouver, BC, has recalled two of its dedicated NGV engines, the 8.9-liter ISL G, and the 11.9-liter ISX-12 G for a software fix.

Citing the need for more fueling infrastructure, one of nation’s major makers of natural gas engines, Cummins Inc., has decided to “pause” the development of its 15-liter spark ignition engine for at least the first six months of this year. Industry sources, however, indicate that this should not slow the development of more long-haul trucking moving to natural gas vehicles (NGV).

It has been a busy September for the natural gas vehicle (NGV) sector, led by the still-evolving timeline on a decision by Vancouver, BC-based Westport Innovations on when to end production of its venerable 15-liter NGV truck engine that has been a centerpiece of its more than a decade-long involvement in natural gas transportation. The company already is working on an up-to-date model with newer and better technology.
