Five Gas Research Projects Get DOE Funding

Five natural gas projects valued at more than $7 million willget partial funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, which willspend $4.7 million to fund innovations in the industry. Theprojects include a 3D seismic imaging study on deep water hydratesin the Gulf of Mexico and another on tools that will drill inarctic conditions.

Washington Group International has been awarded a turnkeyproject valued at more than $200 million to expand Louisiana Land& Exploration’s Lost Cabin Gas Plant facility in centralWyoming. The project will more than double the existing capacity ofthe plant. The new plant will be capable of processing 180 MMcf/dof gas, removing hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, elementalsulfur, and other impurities. LL&E is a wholly owned subsidiaryof Burlington Resources. “LL&E has had great success over thepast several years with this plant and the associated well drillingprogram,” said Washington Petroleum & Chemicals President BobWiesel. “The combination of growing demand, efficient operation,and reservoir volumes is creating the need for the plant to beexpanded again. We designed and built the original Train 1 and theTrain 2 expansion. We take it as a great sign of confidence thatLL&E has chosen us again for the larger Train 3 expansion.” Theraw gas to be processed in the plant comes from wells in the deepMadison Formation in the Madden field in central Wyoming.

Sithe, Cabot in $4 Billion LNG Supply Deal

Sithe Energies Inc. and Cabot LNG Corp., a wholly ownedsubsidiary of Cabot Corp., made a 20-year gas sales and purchaseagreement valued at more than $4 billion. Cabot LNG subsidiaryDistrigas of Massachusetts will be the principal supplier of gas tofuel Sithe’s Mystic Station, a 1,600-megawatt generating plant inEverett, MA.

Dominion Finalizing Remington Purchase

Richmond, VA-based Dominion Energy Inc. is completing its purchaseof gas producer Remington Energy Ltd., of Calgary, AB in a deal valuedat nearly US$300 million that will give Dominion a stake in AlliancePipeline. Still to be completed is its $6.3 billion deal to buyConsolidated Natural Gas (CNG) which was originally announced inFebruary just days before the Remington buyout was revealed (See Daily GPI, Feb. 25, 1999).

PP&L Resources Acquires Penn Fuel Gas Operations

PP&L Resources Inc. announced that it acquired Penn FuelGas, a gas distributor and storage company, in a stock transactionvalued at $133 million. The purchase was the latest step by theutility company to diversify its portfolio of energy products andservices, said PP&L Resources President William F. Hecht.
