Central Maine Power Launches Bulk Power Transmission System Study

Unveiling “a major initiative” to ensure the continued reliability of its bulk power transmission system, Energy East Corp. subsidiary Central Maine Power Co. (CMP) said last week that it has launched its Maine Power Reliability Program (MPRP). The transmission system includes 475 miles of 345-kV lines plus substations and control facilities that link New Brunswick, Canada to New Hampshire and southern New England.

North American Producers’ 2Q Results Mixed; E&P Budgets on Increase

U.S. and Canadian-based producers began unveiling their second quarter results last week, and while some were able to take advantage of higher commodity prices, the results so far are mixed. However, some the larger U.S.-focused independents with extra cash said they will use some of their extra cash to not only pay down debt, but to increase exploration and production (E&P) efforts in the last six months of the year.

While the energy industry — from natural gas interests, to coal to nuclear power — hailed the Bush energy plan for its long-overdue focus on developing the nation’s energy resources and infrastructure, environmentalists bashed it as a bunch of dirty words aimed at derailing the movement to reduce pollution and preserve the environment.

BP, Chevron, Burlington To Pursue Canadian Gas

Just two weeks after unveiling plans to build a pipeline to transport Alaskan North Slope gas to the Lower 48, BP has teamed up with Chevron Corp. and Burlington Resources Inc. to produce gas in the Canadian Arctic. Although no timetable was released, the companies said last week they will spend “considerable resources” to build a production base in the Mackenzie Delta.
