A record low in U.S. nuclear generation this month has boosted natural gas demand, according to an analysis by Barclays Capital.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has a slate of 31 renewable energy projects that it says will undergo fast-track environmental and public review in order to qualify for funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The deadline for the projects to receive incentive funding is December, and BLM Director Bob Abbey said his agency is committed to shepherding the projects along.

The power industry will undergo a “very significant” restructuring “that will yield enormous growth opportunities for us as a company,” Mark Jacobs, CFO at Reliant Energy, told an audience of financial professionals last Tuesday at the Banc of America Energy and Power Conference. “I think those growth opportunities may come more quickly than we’re all expecting,” Jacobs said.

The Cove Point liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on the eastern shore of Maryland was scheduled to undergo an inspection by FERC Wednesday and by the U.S. Coast Guard today. If all goes well, the mothballed terminal could receive a test LNG cargo on Friday, according to Dan Donovan, a spokesman for Dominion Resources, parent of Dominion Cove Point. He said the company also may consider plans later in the year to expand the plant and possibly its pipeline system to the Northeast gas grid.
