Petrohawk Squeezed More Out of Shales Last Year

Petrohawk Energy Corp. charted 50% pro forma year-over-year reserves growth last year, ending 2010 with 3.4 Tcfe of estimated proved reserves, the company said. Shale plays led the charge, particularly with a 100% increase in production from the Haynesville and Bossier shales and a whopping 235% increase in the Eagle Ford in South Texas.

Weekly Storage Withdrawal Narrowly Misses Record

Gas storage withdrawals during the week that ended Feb. 9 totaled a massive 259 Bcf, merely 1 Bcf shy of the all-time record set during the week of Jan. 17, 1997, the Energy Information (EIA) reported last week. Furthermore, the cold last week is expected to lead to yet another 200-plus Bcf withdrawal, further diminishing the surplus compared to the five-year average and putting storage levels much closer to what would be considered normal for this time of year.

FERC Staff Predicts 2006 Power Generation Additions Will Be Half 2005 Level

U.S. generation capacity additions in 2005 totaled 17 GW, down 25% from 2004 and 75% from 2002, and FERC staff predicts additions of new capacity will fall again this year. In a presentation to the full Commission Thursday, Stephen Harvey, deputy director of FERC’s Office of Market Oversight and Investigations, said current plans indicate that additions in 2006 are likely to be roughly half the 2005 level.

Bearish 75 Bcf Storage Injection Puts Bullish Case in Doubt

Coming in well above the majority of expectations, weekly storage injections totaled 75 Bcf, according to the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) gas storage report Thursday for the week ended Oct. 14. Adding to the weakness that was already prevalent in the natural gas futures market Thursday morning, the bearish report pushed the November contract even lower, eventually settling at $12.977, down 57.2 cents on the day.

Bentek: Scheduled Gulf Gas Production Down 75% from Pre-Katrina Levels

Although Gulf Coast and Gulf of Mexico natural gas production was on the rise Monday, shut-ins still totaled about 10.18 Bcf/d based on scheduled gas production nominations into interstate and intrastate pipelines in Texas and Louisiana, according to a report by Golden, CO-based Bentek Energy, which tracks daily and intraday gas scheduling on the nation’s gas pipeline grid.

Royal Dutch Shell was the big bidder on leases in Alaska’s Beaufort Sea in the Minerals Management Service’s (MMS) Oil and Gas Lease Sale 195 in Anchorage, AK, on Wednesday. Shell’s bids totaled more than $44 million out of the $46.7 million received by MMS for 127 blocks totaling about 618,751 offshore acres. ConocoPhillips Alaska Inc. and Armstrong Alaska Inc. placed the remaining bids.
