PG&E Advances on $9.6B Settlement Financing; S&P Signals Rating Upgrade

Culminating a week of progress in pulling together the financing underpinning of its exit from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. on Friday announced that it intends to offer $6.7 billion in first mortgage bonds to help pay credit claims in its $12 billion utility bankruptcy. This followed announcement earlier in the week that the utility secured $2.9 billion in credit facility commitments and authorization from California state regulators for its new financial structure.

Mackenzie Project Sized for Growth From 1.2 Bcf/d to Possible 1.9 Bcf/d

Growth will be built into the Canadian Arctic natural gas project, with the sponsors expecting it to lay the foundations for a new branch of the industry spanning the 800-mile length of the proposed Mackenzie Valley pipeline, planners revealed in a Preliminary Information Package (PIP) submitted June 18, which has been evaluated and accepted as complete.

Houston Exploration Hits Gas in Three GOM Discoveries

The Houston Exploration Co. on Thursday announced three natural gas discoveries in the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). The wells, which together are expected to produce about 35 MMcf/d, will begin ramping up this year, with the first well set to begin production in August.

Two critical ingredients will come together within days — or weeks, at most — for the Canadian entry in the arctic natural gas pipeline race, the federal minister of indian affairs and northern development predicted Monday. Robert Nault said he expects a land claim agreement with the last holdout among the First Nations of the NorthWest Territories, the Deh Cho. He also described a deal for one-third native ownership of the Mackenzie Valley project as done except for final details.

Con Edison to Use DOT Grant for 3-D Pipe Mapping Research

Consolidated Edison (Con Edison), which was awarded a $439,999 pipeline safety research contract by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), will work together with Witten Technologies and Electromagnetic Instruments to develop a 3-D digital mapping system for identifying steel and plastic underground equipment, and detecting leaks.

Late Night Announcement Expected for Enron, UBS

In yet another short in the long unraveling wires holding Enron Corp. together, the bankrupt company and UBS Warburg on Monday delayed the official announcement of a transaction that would send Enron’s energy wholesale unit into the hands of the Swiss-based investment banking conglomerate. The transaction, set to be announced first Monday morning and then the afternoon, was instead moved to 11 p.m. EST Monday night.

UtiliCorp/Aquila Merger a Done Deal

What once was separated now is back together. Kansas City, MO-based UtiliCorp United has completed its previously announced short-form merger of its Aquila Inc. subsidiary with a UtiliCorp subsidiary. In November 2001, UtiliCorp unveiled its plans to buy back the 20% of its trading and risk management arm, Aquila, that it sold to the public earlier in 2001 and adopt Aquila as its corporate name (see NGI, Nov. 12, 2001; Nov. 19, 2001).
