Shale Drilling Activity Increases 38% Led by Oil/Liquids Plays

Oil- and liquids-rich natural gas plays marched to the forefront of drilling activity in the past year with the Niobrara, Eagle Ford and Bakken leading a 38% increase in active rigs from 684 active rigs a year ago to 947 rigs as of Jan. 7, according to a shale basin rig count compiled by NGI’s Shale Daily.

Points Shift Price Directions from Prior Day

There seemed to be some sameness in Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s market patterns, but it was sort of like looking at the price table in a mirror. The locations that had taken most of the falls Tuesday were in rally mode Wednesday, while the small increases that had dominated the rest of the market Tuesday fell by mostly greater amounts Wednesday.

Environmentalists Push for Fracking Ban in New York

A group of more than 40 environmental organizations, including the National Resources Defense Council, Delaware Riverkeeper Network and the Atlantic Chapter of the Sierra Club, is calling on the New York State Assembly to approve legislation that would place a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing (fracking) in the state’s Marcellus and Utica shales until May 15, which is when further environmental studies by the Environmental Protection Agency are expected to be completed.
