Gas Resources Continue to Grow, But Challenges Lie Ahead

Despite sharply higher gas prices and an apparent struggle to maintain adequate supply levels, gas producers have more than enough reservoir targets and they are continuing to expand the nation’s gas resource base, according to a biennial report released yesterday by the Potential Gas Committee (PGC). However, committee officials warned that some energy policy changes are needed for the industry to continue expanding the resource and to meet burgeoning demand.

On average, U.S. gas production appears to have been up slightly (2%, according to financial reports from 25 producers) at the end of the third quarter compared to 3Q99. However, there was a wide variation among producers, with some reporting huge increases, such as Mitchell Energy, Devon and Coastal, while others reported large declines, including Amerada Hess, Texaco, Kerr McGee and Ocean Energy (see preliminary tally).

Vector Pipeline President Juri Otsason said last week the 720MMcf/d pipeline project from Chicago to Dawn, ON, is running alittle behind schedule and probably will not be in service untilthe end of October. It originally was expected to be in serviceOct. 1. He also said the results of a recent Vector open seasonwere disappointing despite the company’s new contract to provide200 MMcf/d of short-haul firm service to NIPSCO.
