The common thinking of natural gas futures traders and analysts appears to be that the market is priming for an upward reversal followed by an extended stretch run of buying; however, the timing of the switch is still anyone’s bet. Until the rebound begins, some industry experts believe the downside is still open on a limited basis, which April natural gas futures tested once again on Monday.

California Hydrogen Highway Stalled; PG&E Balks

California’s widely heralded plans a few years back to create a “Hydrogen Highway” by developing 100 fueling stations along the 400-mile stretch between Los Angeles and San Francisco by 2010 has hit some roadblocks as two stations have closed and planned facilities are being canceled. The latest was dropped by Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E).

Natural Gas Futures Climb as Crude Tops $73/Bbl Again

Coming off of a couple of hectic trading weeks that saw prompt-month natural gas rally significantly in a short stretch of time only to sink just as quickly, June natural gas futures on Monday traded within a $6.570 to $6.800 range before closing at $6.695, up 14 cents on the day. Monday’s close higher halted a seven-day streak of lower settlements.

LNG Tanker Truck Burns East of Reno, Nearby Evacuations Ordered

The cargo of a tanker truck reported to be carrying liquefied natural gas (LNG) caught fire on a stretch of Interstate Highway 80 about 30 miles east of Reno, NV, causing the highway to be shut in both directions and residents and businesses within a one-mile radius evacuated. A pipeline safety engineer from the Nevada Public Utilities Commission was headed to the scene early in the afternoon for a fire that broke out near a truck rest stop about 11 a.m. PDT.

FERC Approves Paiute Pipeline Acquisition of Peaking Facilities

FERC Wednesday approved a certificate for Paiute Pipeline to acquire and operate the H.G. Laub LNG storage peaking facilities and an associated stretch of pipeline near Lovelock, NV from Uzal LLC for $21.97 million. Paiute currently leases and operates the facilities, which were built in 1982, including the 61 miles of 20-inch pipeline loop.
