Higher U.S. Natural Gas Forecasts Coalesce

Six energy prognosticators over the past week have raised their outlooks for domestic natural gas prices this year, with one indicating that $4.50/MMBtu this summer is “on the table” based on a colder-than-expected end to winter and slowing production in major onshore basins.

Tillerson: Fracking Is a Sipper, Not a Gulper

Two and a half million gallons sounds like a lot of water, and producers can use that much and more to stimulate a well with hydraulic fracturing (fracking), but other uses consume a lot more, ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson told an audience on the Council on Foreign Relations Wednesday.

Colorado City Told Fracking Ban Not Possible

Officials from one of two Colorado cities to halt hydraulic fracturing (fracking) within its boundaries, Commerce City, heard from a panel of experts that a permanent ban against the oil/gas industry drilling technology is not possible, and besides, the state already closely regulates the practice.

Texas Regulators Adopt Frack Fluid Disclosure Rule

The Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) has adopted a rule for the disclosure of chemicals in hydraulic fracturing (fracking) fluids used to stimulate oil and gas wells in the state. Earlier this year state lawmakers passed legislation requiring such disclosure.

Arkansas to Require Frack Fluid Disclosure

In a unanimous vote, Arkansas regulators have agreed to give the public access to the ingredients of hydraulic fracturing (frack) fluid used to stimulate wells in their state, but they can’t have the recipe. The new rule will apply to wells permitted after Jan. 15.

Professor: Gas, Coal Full-Cycle Emissions Are Similar

Total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from burning natural gas obtained using hydraulic fracturing to stimulate wells and those from burning coal obtained from mountaintop removal may be similar or even greater in the case of natural gas, a Cornell University professor has claimed.

Analysts Cut Price Forecasts on Storage Surplus

Spring and summer gas prices will have to remain in the $6/MMBtu area (Henry Hub) or lower to rebuild industrial demand, stimulate gas-fired power generation (whose main competitor is now coal rather than residual fuel oil) and deter liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, said Credit Suisse analyst Carl Kirst in a research note on Wednesday.
