Sempra Utilities’ Rate Settlements Approved by CPUC

The California Public Utilities Commission last Wednesday approved separate cost-of-service rate settlements for Sempra Energy’s two utilities, resulting in slight decreases in their rates while authorizing collective revenue requirements of more than $2.4 billion for Southern California Gas Co. and San Diego Gas and Electric Co. The action was unanimously approved by the five-member panel, although two members had concerns about the lack of detail in the two settlements.

Shareholder Cases Regarding AEP’s Gas Trading Dropped

American Electric Power (AEP) reported Monday that two separate shareholder derivative cases against the company and individual members of its board of directors were dismissed Nov. 5. The cases charged that the defendants failed to maintain adequate internal controls over their natural gas trading operations.

Pogo Acquires San Juan Basin Gas Assets

Houston-based independent Pogo Producing Co. is acquiring some natural gas properties in the San Juan Basin in two separate transactions from unnamed sellers. With the two agreements, which total $189 million, Pogo will add an estimated 100 Bcfe along with current production of 15 MMcf/d.

Black Hills: 2nd Quarter Results to Be Lower Than Expected

Depressed results across-the-board for separate oil/gas, electric utility and energy marketing operations added up to lower-than-expected results in the second quarter, South Dakota-based Black Hills Corp. announced Thursday, previewing financial results it will release Aug. 10. Although the company just offered ranges of numbers now, overall the actual performance will vary from expected performance, Black Hills said in a financial announcement.

Marathon Spends $500M to Acquire Pennaco

Fueling rumors that USX-Marathon Group may separate its steeland energy businesses and then sell a beefed up oil and gasbusiness, Houston subsidiary Marathon Oil put together a $500million deal to acquire two-year-old Pennaco Energy Inc., a companywhose key assets are tied to coalbed methane (CBM) gas productionin the Powder River Basin of northern Wyoming and southern Montana.
