Citing cold weather conditions, MRT said it is issuing a System Protection Warning (SPW) effective with the start of Tuesday’s gas day. MRT will not schedule volumes that result in a daily short imbalance position. “If actual deliveries exceed scheduled volumes, shippers may be required to add supply intraday or reduce their takes from MRT,” the pipeline said.
REX Reconsiders Opal to Chicago Link, Opens REX-West Pipeline
With the on-schedule opening of approximately 500 miles of Rockies Express-West (REX-West) under their belts, pipeline officials have set their sights on two more milestones in the epic project: reviving a long-shelved idea with Kinder Morgan’s Natural Gas Pipeline Co. of America (NGPL) to serve Chicago and opening REX’s Northeast Express.
REX Reconsiders Opal-to-Chicago Pipeline Project
With last weekend’s on-schedule opening of approximately 500 miles of Rockies Express-West (REX-West) under their belt, pipeline officials have set their sights on two more milestones in the epic project: reviving a long-shelved idea with Kinder Morgan’s Natural Gas Pipeline Co. of America (NGPL) to serve Chicago and opening REX’s Northeast Express.

Northern Natural Gas, operator of the Matagorda Offshore Pipeline System (MOPS), said construction delays have changed its tentative schedule for restoring service on MOPS following a June 12 shutdown (see Daily GPI, July 20). Nine platforms are now scheduled to be reactivated during the gas days of Friday and Saturday for pressure testing of the system and bringing the mainline back to normal operating pressure. A pig launching from the Mustang 758 platform is set for Monday of next week to clear accumulated liquids. Nominations will be accepted for Monday’s gas day for the nine platforms that were activated to facilitate the pigging activity. The pig is expected to be received at the Tivoli (TX) Plant on or before Aug. 3, where the plant is expected to take a minimum of three days to process the liquids. All platform production will be shut in during the liquids processing. Once they have been processed, the MOPS system will return to normal operations. Currently that is expected to happen Aug. 7, Northern Natural said.
Indiana Bat Steps Up Urgency for FERC Approval of REX-West
While the schedule and requested certificate date for the REX-West leg of the Rockies Express Pipeline originally was driven by the demands of the proposed pipeline’s shippers, there is an additional reason that makes expedited approval of the project even more imperative — the Indiana bat, the company told FERC last Wednesday.

Weekly Storage Withdrawal Record May Be Within Reach
Gas storage withdrawals last week may have broken the weekly record set Jan. 17, 1997 at more than 260 Bcf, according to a number of forecasters. Not only did the severe cold early in the week send gas demand to peak levels on some northeastern local distribution systems, but the extended cold also sustained high withdrawals for multiple days.

MRT is declaring a System Protection Warning, effective Thursday until further notice, that sets these conditions: MRT will not schedule any Main Line IT or AOR (Authorized Overrun) volumes for delivery north of Glendale, AR; and firm volumes will be limited to their primary direction of flow. To avoid OFOs, shippers who were relying on Main Line IT and/or AOR volumes were encouraged to resource supply to MRT’s East Line, where capacity is available, or reduce applicable delivery volumes.
