Canadian 88 Pulls Up For-Sale Sign

Nine months after it began looking for a buyer, Canadian 88 Energy Corp. has taken itself off the selling block, announcing Tuesday that financial and operating results have improved enough to succeed independently as a mid-sized natural gas producer. Company officials also acknowledged that in their opinion, potential buyers weren’t prepared to pay enough for the Calgary-based company’s increased gas production potential.

Marathon Considering Sale of Energy Assets

Marathon Oil Co., which completed its acquisition of gasproducer Pennaco Energy Inc. earlier this month, expects toincrease its oil and gas production another 3% this year throughexploration and possible acquisitions, said CEO Clarence Cazalot.However, Cazalot was coy about whether parent company USX-MarathonGroup would spin off or sell its growing energy unit this year.

PanCanadian’s New Assets Add Production, Reach

Montana Power Co. is no longer in the oil and gas business, after closing last week on the sale of some of its energy assets to PanCanadian Petroleum Ltd. for $475 million in a combination of cash and credit. The assets include oil, natural gas and gas liquids exploration, production and marketing companies in the United States and Canada.
