FERC Stands by Creditworthiness Element of CA Mitigation

FERC is refusing to budge on several key points included in a market monitoring and mitigation plan for California’s sagging energy markets that was unveiled in April. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission re-emphasized its belief that it is important for the California Independent System Operator (Cal-ISO) to ensure the presence of a creditworthy buyer for all transactions made with any generator that offers power in compliance with the rules set forth in the mitigation plan.

Power Sales Surge Enron’s 2Q Profit 40%

Houston-based Enron Corp., hit in the past few months with accusations of overcharging in California and sagging stock performance, wiped the slate clean Thursday with its second quarter earnings release, announcing profit was up 40% over a year ago, boosted by surging electricity and gas sales in North America and Europe. The company said it sold almost twice as much power in North America and five times as much in Europe in the quarter.

Steady Selling Deals Futures Second-Straight Losing Session

Pressured lower by weaker crude oil futures along with a saggingphysical market, natural gas at the New York Mercantile Exchangewas softer Thursday with buyers on the sidelines, unwilling to addto their already hefty longs. After chopping lower for most of thesession the October contract received a late boost on renewedhurricane fears. However those late gains were more than offset byearly losses and that left the prompt month in negative territory,off 3.1 cents at $5.287 at the close yesterday.
