Looking to expand the types of customers it serves, AGL Resources announced Monday that it is acquiring Compass Energy Services Inc., a privately held Richmond, VA-based commercial and industrial energy services company.

Richmond, VA-based Dominion Resources and Norway’s Statoil ASA said last Thursday that they have officially broken ground on an expansion project that will increase capacity and storage at the Dominion Cove Point liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in southern Maryland.

In addition to moving around some of its executives and appointing a few new ones (see related brief), Richmond, VA-based Dominion also has separated two operating functions overseen by its Dominion Energy operating unit. Under the new organizational structure, the former Dominion Energy operating unit is divided into two separate business segments — Dominion Generation and Dominion Energy. Dominion Generation will manage the company’s portfolio of more than 24,000 MW of generation. Dominion Energy will manage the company’s electric transmission, marketing and natural gas pipeline and storage businesses. This change was effective Jan. 1. “We’re seeking to place our top talent and energy in positions where they can maximize their contribution to shareholder value. As a matter of ongoing policy, we also seek to streamline our organizational structure. The personnel and organizational changes announced today advance these goals,” CEO Thos. E. Capps said.

Richmond, VA-based Dominion announced strong third quarter earnings bolstered by higher returns in its pipeline and E&P units, and saying it was on track to continue the trend into the fourth quarter and come close to its stated earnings guidance of $4.90 to $4.95.

Richmond, VA-based Dominion said it is conducting an open season in the first quarter of 2002 to seek customers for high deliverability storage service from its Hackberry storage facility in southwest Louisiana. Dominion said it plans to construct compressor facilities and natural gas pipelines to connect Hackberry’s existing salt caverns to several interstate pipelines in the area that carry supplies to the major U.S. markets.

Richmond, VA-based Dominion Exploration & Production Inc. reported that it has entered into a landmark agreement with Northern Ute Partners LLC to jointly explore for and develop oil and natural gas on 83,000 acres of previously restricted lands within the boundaries of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation of the Ute Indian Tribe in Utah.
