New York, Ohio Storage Projects Get Environmental Nods

FERC has issued favorable environmental reviews for two natural gas storage facilities in New York and Ohio, which would add a combined 7 Bcf of capacity in the Northeast. Environmental assessments (EA) were awarded to Arlington Storage Co., LLC for its Thomas Corners storage project in Steuben County, NY, and to Columbia Gas Transmission’s Ohio storage expansion at its Crawford and Weaver fields.

BLM’s Permitting Practices Scrutinized

The Government Accountability Office (GAO), the investigative arm of Congress, is looking into the way the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) may have bypassed some environmental reviews to issue oil and natural gas drilling permits across the West. One particular area of GAO’s inquiry involves how some natural gas drilling permits were issued to Bill Barrett Corp. in the environmentally sensitive Nine Mile Canyon area of Utah, officials said.

Rep. Waxman Challenges EPA on BHP Billiton LNG Handling

Veteran California Congressman, Rep. Henry Waxman, earlier this month challenged the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over its handling of the reviews of the proposed offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal by Australian resources giant, BHP Billiton. Waxman expressed concerns in a Jan. 16 letter that the federal agency was rolling over for proponents of the LNG floating terminal.
