Three associations representing electric and natural gas utilities and power providers have called on Congress to exempt end-users from having to clear and trade on regulated exchanges over-the-counter (OTC) derivative transactions that are used to hedge against commodity price risk. While supporting the clearing of derivative transactions involving large dealers in OTC legislation being considered by Congress, they said they opposed any mandate requiring “all or most” OTC derivative transactions to be centrally cleared or traded on regulated exchanges, saying this ultimately would increase prices to retail gas and electric customers.

Energy Consumers Balk at Utility Revenue Protections
National organizations representing energy consumers — large and small — urged Congress Monday not to mandate a national approach to push more energy-saving measures. Rather they want states to have the flexibility of varying their approaches to energy efficiency. The national association of state regulators also supports this state-focused approach.

Survey: 2Q U.S. Gas Output Gains Sequentially, Year-over-Year
U.S. natural gas production in 2Q2007 increased 1.9% sequentially from the first three months of the year, representing the first sequential gain since 3Q2006, and gas output gained 3.5% from the same period a year ago, according to a survey by SunTrust Robinson Humphrey/Gerdes Group (STRH) energy analysts.
