Gas Exec: Shale Impact in NW Cools LNG Imports

Shale gas so far has not impacted prices and supplies in the Pacific Northwest other than to make more remote the possibility of liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports and to increase the chances of exporting supplies from British Columbia (BC), Northwest Natural Gas Co. gas supply director Randy Friedman told the audience at “LDC Forum: Rockies and the West” conference Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Prices Up with Little Weather, Futures Backing

Other than a remote tropical wave that presumably could enter the Gulf of Mexico next week, there was little to explain price increases at all but one point Monday. Industrial load was returning from its usual weekend decline, but that hardly sufficed as a rationale for cash market gains despite flat futures on the previous Friday and only a modicum of cooling load outside the Pacific Northwest and the area from Texas through the desert Southwest and interior California.

A 36-inch diameter portion of the Oasis Pipeline System’s Waha-to-Katy line at a remote location in Central Texas, between San Antonio and Austin, ruptured and an explosion appears to have damaged a compressor station early Thursday morning.

Transportation Notes

Dominion experienced a rupture Saturday on a 20-inch supply line to one of its storage facilities in Harrison County, WV. The blast occurred in a remote area and didn’t cause a fire or injuries, a spokesman said. The line was isolated shortly afterwards, and because it wasn’t a residential line, no one lost service, he said. The pipeline was continuing an investigation into the cause of the incident Monday.
