Price Declines Continue With No Rally in Sight

Spot prices continued to wither Wednesday due to a combination of relatively moderate temperatures in several regions around the midpoint of what is normally the hottest month of the year and further softness in prior-day futures. And despite continuing deficits of current storage compared to year-ago levels and the five-year average, traders appear unconcerned about inventories, especially with what was generally expected to be a very busy Atlantic hurricane season having little impact so far on Gulf of Mexico output.

Continuing flat energy demand in a time of record hydroelectric supplies has natural gas stakeholders in the Pacific Northwest watching as the shale gas boom redefines energy delivery patterns and markets. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has granted Empire Pipeline Inc. a certificate authorizing it to proceed with a pipeline expansion in Pennsylvania and New York that would enable Marcellus Shale production to be shipped northward on the Empire system. The certificate authorizes Empire to construct, operate and replace about 15 miles of 24-inch diameter pipeline to extend the Empire Connector Pipeline, an interconnection with the facilities of Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co., and modifications to an existing compressor station to permit bidirectional flow on Empire’s system. Empire is a subsidiary of New York-based National Fuel Gas.
