The final local permit from the city of Ensenada was obtained Friday by Sempra Energy enabling the company to plan to start construction early next year on its Costa Azul liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminal along the Pacific Coast of North Baja, Mexico, according to a report over the weekend in the Los Angeles Times. Sempra made no formal announcement, although it has a conference call scheduled for Thursday to report third quarter financial results.

California’s two major energy agencies told a state Senate Utilities and Communications Committee last week (Feb. 10) in Sacramento that additional “energy action” is needed this year to keep the state on its current track of restoring the major energy utilities to full financial strength and increasing the electricity and natural gas systems’ reliability for the future beyond 2006.

NUI Corp.’s City Gas Co. of Florida subsidiary has received approval from the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) to increase its natural gas base rates by $6.7 million, which includes an interim rate increase of $2.9 million that the PSC approved for City Gas in October.
