FERC has given Williams the green light to reactivate and expand liquefied natural gas (LNG) import services at its Cove Point LNG terminal in Lusby, MD, saying it would provide “substantial benefits” in light of the growing role of LNG in the domestic market and the rising demand for gas on the East Coast.

Williams’ proposal to reactivate the mothballed Cove Pointliquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal and associated facilities inCalvert County, MD, is coming under fire from all quarters -potential distribution customers and the state.

Despite current plans to reactivate LNG imports and expand the Cove Point LNG plant, Columbia Energy Group has decided the Lusby, MD-based facility does not fit into its core group of assets. The company announced plans last week to sell Cove Point and a related pipeline to Williams Gas Pipeline for $150 million. The sale is subject to clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act but should be completed by July 2000, the companies said.
