Nymex Fall-Off Tempers Bullish Euphoria

It has been a good spring for bull traders at Nymex. SinceFebruary 26, the now-spot June contract has rallied nearly 70 centsto trade as high as $2.40 last week. But just as constructivetechnicals and low storage injection figures seemed to point tocontinued strength, the market spiraled lower Thursday and Friday.And while long liquidation spurred by the bearish one-two combo ofnuclear units coming back on line and moderating temperaturesacross the country were as good as reasons as any for the marketturning lower, traders remain divided as to the price directionheading into the summer. June finished the week mixed at $2.273, 2pennies above its close from the prior Friday, but 2.2 cents lowerfor the day.

February Gaps Above $2 on Short-Term Fundamentals

Natural Gas futures rallied again yesterday as traders reactedto colder-than-expected temperatures throughout much of the Midwestand Southeast. And similar to advances made last week, Monday’sprice action was fast and furious with the February contractleading the way and gapping 6 cents above Thursday’s high. However,once the $2.085 high for the day was reached about 10:30 EST, theprompt month was left to move sideways within a narrow trading bandfor the rest of the session, notching a 12.6-cent increase tofinish at $2.071.

For the second day in a row Thursday, natural gas futures dippedand rallied within a wide trading band. But in contrast toWednesday’s late price falloff, trading yesterday featured ashort-covering rally before the close that lifted the Januarycontract to its $1.959 settlement price.

Early Dose of Summer Sends May Futures Above $2.40

The May Nymex contract rallied 5.7 cents to settle Monday at$2.409, thanks to what sources said was good peak demand buying inthe physical market. “There was definitely some peak airconditioning demand in Texas today, and that’s exactly where youwant to see it to influence natural gas prices,” one of the sourcessaid. Buoyed by that strength, May had no problem rising from itsopening trade of $2.345, which also turned out to be its low pricefor the day.
