With 10-Cent Decline, Bears Arrest Four-Day Futures Rally

Repealing a portion of the gains achieved in last week’s four-day price rally, natural gas futures shuffled lower Friday, as traders pressured prices lower in sympathy with softer weekend cash market values. The November contract closed at $2.43, down 10.1 cents for the session, but 20.3 cents above its closing point from the week prior. Estimated volume was again healthy for a Friday, as 65,418 contracts changed hands.

PG&E Utility Sues to Force DWR to Hold Hearings

Alleging there is evidence that its customers would be overcharged by more than $1.4 billion, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. filed a suit last Tuesday in a state Superior Court in Sacramento asking that the state’s power-buying agency, the Department of Water Resources (DWR), be forced to hold a public hearing to determine if its estimated $13 billion in power purchases are accurate.

Natural wants to add new compression on a leased basis to its Indian Basin Lateral and other facilities to make deliveries of up to 42,000 Dth/d by the fourth quarter of 2001 through Transwestern Pipeline in Eddy County, NM.

Williams Seals Deal on TransCanada’s NGL Assets

Williams’ energy services business unit closed its previously announced acquisition of the natural gas liquids (NGL) portion of TransCanada’s midstream operations. The $540 million deal was first announced on Aug. 3 (see NGI, Aug. 7).

Coastal Corp.’s Gulfstream Natural Gas System has sent a requestfor quotation (RFQ) to 10 pre-qualified contractors for installationof the offshore portion of its proposed 744-mile natural gas pipelinefrom Alabama across the Gulf of Mexico to Florida. The RFQ calls foroffshore assembly and installation of more than 400 miles of 36-inchdiameter pipe to to serve Gulfstream’s customers in Florida. Thepipeline says it has 10 large, non-affiliated Florida utilities andpower generation facilities signed to long-term commitments for themajority of its capacity. Gulfstream is one of two largeunder-the-Gulf pipelines proposed to serve the Florida Peninsula. TheFederal Energy Regulatory Commission last month issued preliminaryapprovals for both Gulfstream and Buccaneer pipelines, each of whichproposes to carry about a Bcf/d into the state. The latter issponsored by Williams and Duke Energy (see Daily GPI, April 26).
