Raymond: U.S. Eventually to Become Gas Import Dependent

North American producers have reached their peak in unit deliverability for natural gas, and as production continues to decline, the United States will gradually slip into becoming import dependent, the CEO of Exxon Mobil Corp. warned Tuesday. With a time frame of 15-20 years “the United States will get in gas in the same position as oil,” said Lee R. Raymond.

Saying it was experiencing peak day operating conditions Tuesday and that weather and load forecasts indicated this would continue through at least Wednesday, Algonquin will restrict forward haul Authorized Overrun, AIT and due-shipper makeup volumes for Wednesday’s gas day. “The need for any additional restrictions will be evaluated after the timely cycle,” the pipeline added. Later Tuesday afternoon, Algonquin reported experiencing an unscheduled outage at its Southeast Compressor Station affecting mainline throughput. Thus it added “the majority of secondary firm nominations scheduled on a forward haul basis” through Southeast to the previously announced constraints for Wednesday, saying only nominations for incremental Primary No-Notice service will be accepted.

Cold Keeps Prices Rising, But Peak May Have Been Thursday

The bull market in cash proved to have staying power Thursday, with further advances tending to outstrip those of the day before. Price movement varied widely and inconsistently from slightly higher at several Gulf Coast and Northeast points to as much as about 35 cents higher in the Rockies. A continuation of cold weather throughout the North and much of the West was credited with keeping prices firmer.

Schlesinger: Increased LNG Imports Along the East Coast Will Flatten Basis

When prices hit $10 last winter, that brought numerous plans out of the woodwork for new liquefied natural gas receiving terminals. Those proposed terminals in the Bahamas, Louisiana and in Texas along with the recommissioning and expansion of existing terminals along the East Coast will have a significant impact on basis and gas prices going forward, Ben Schlesinger, president of Schlesinger and Associates, said at GasMart/Power in Reno.

KeySpan Takes Special Charge, Lowers Earnings Outlook

KeySpan Corp. (KSE) revealed that it will be taking a $30 million after-tax second quarter charge, or 22 cents per share, against earnings to tie up some recently discovered loose ends on several construction projects of its Roy Kay Companies subsidiary, which it purchased last year. CEO Robert Catell also said the recent declines in gas and power prices have forced a downward revision in full-year results for the company.

NYISO Seeks FERC OK of Market Abuse Penalties

Pointing out the potential for market power abuses during this summer’s peak demand periods, the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) has asked FERC to give it a quick go-ahead to penalize for repeated abuses of market power in the Empire State.
