CIG declared an OFO Saturday because of the extremely cold weather in its market area, then ended it Sunday. Wellhead freeze-offs in the Rockies limited the amount of supply that CIG could deliver to Xcel Energy’s Public Service Co. of Colorado utility, resulting in rolling power outages of brief duration Saturday (see related story).

El Paso 3Q Losses Widen on Derivative Losses, Asset Sales

A huge loss on the market value of derivative contracts, coupled with write-offs for asset sales and in value of a power plant, pushed El Paso Corp. to a third quarter loss of $321 million (minus 50 cents/share), from a $214 million loss (minus 33 cents) in 3Q2004. Asset sales also sent revenue plunging 43% to $821 million from $1.4 billion.

Wellhead freeze-offs and other cold-related delivery problems in Canada in January led to a sharp 562 MMcf/d drop in pipeline receipts from December 2003 levels to 15.419 Bcf/d, according to a survey by UBS analysts.

Enron Proposes Three Spin Offs, including PGE, in Bankruptcy Filing

Enron Corp.’s emergence from bankruptcy would put it back into the mix as a North American natural gas pipeline operator, according to the bankruptcy plan filed Friday in New York. Similar to the preview detailed last March (see NGI, March 24), Enron would spin off two separate companies, one holding its North American interests, the other its international businesses. Portland General Electric (PGE) would be the third entity, although a sale is still possible.

Two CA Utilities Take Multi-Billion Dollar Write-Offs

The holding companies for California’s two major utilities — one in bankruptcy and the other on the brink — belatedly last Tuesday reported multi-billion-dollar losses for 2000 after taking substantial after-tax charges in the fourth quarter because of uncollected wholesale power costs. Both indicated that California’s continuing energy crisis will impact overall financial results this year, and first-quarter earnings will need to be reported by May 15 under Securities and Exchange Commission requirements.
