As a broader debate over the future of fossil fuels and the reliability of the state’s energy resources continues to unfold, the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) recently announced that it’s prepared to meet forecasted electricity demand this winter and maintain operating reserves to battle severe cold.

The New York Independent System Operator’s (NYISO) carbon pricing proposal could help the state achieve its climate goals faster and more effectively, while also further reducing the use of natural gas, according to a report by the Analysis Group.

New York is prepared for the gas and electric demands of this summer with a total capacity of 42,056 MW, according to the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO). The summer forecast projects a 32,382 MW peak demand, or with extreme weather conditions, 34,186 MW.

A little less than a year removed from a stretch of intense cold that blasted the East Coast and sent natural gas prices skyrocketing in early January, New York’s grid operator said it’s prepared to meet electricity demand this winter.

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) has released an array of options that it plans to explore to respond to changes in the state’s wholesale electricity markets, including slapping a price on carbon emissions to better incentivize more environmentally friendly options, according to its Power Trends 2018 report released earlier this month.

New York’s electric system, which relies in large part on natural gas, has the capacity to meet demand for electricity and the necessary operating reserves during extreme cold through this winter, according to state’s grid operator.
