Desks of Enron’s Top Dogs Go to, Uh, the Dogs

The custom-made desks used by former Enron executives Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skilling were donated to Saving Animals, a nonprofit animal protection organization. The charity will auction the items on e-Bay through March 24 with all proceeds benefiting the group’s spay, neuter and adoption programs.

CA Low Income Gas Consumers Given Added Protection by CPUC

In responses to pleas it heard earlier in the month from the nonprofit social service sector, the California Public Utilities Commission Thursday approved added protection for qualified low-income utility customers against this winter’s expected high natural gas costs. The CPUC made significant changes to two of the state’s major low-income customer programs.

Nonprofit environmental group Campaign to Protect America’s Lands (CPAL) said last week that results from a survey of registered voters in New Mexico show that fewer than one in four, including less than half the registered Republicans, favor the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) plan to permit oil and gas drilling in the Otero Mesa region, which includes two counties, Otero and Sierra, in southern New Mexico.

Summer Peaks, Gas Prices Worry CA Economic Forecaster

Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. (LAEDC), a nonprofit economic development group, indicated in its latest weekly economic outlook for the region and state that energy this summer could be a worrisome component of the state’s sagging economy. It particularly targeted the potential ill-effects of high natural gas prices, which could be felt more severely in the East than the West, the forecast noted.

Illinois’ statewide nonprofit utility watchdog, the Citizens Utility Board (CUB), on Wednesday filed a class-action lawsuit accusing Nicor Gas and an unregulated sister company, Nicor Services, of deceptively marketing its “Fixed Bill” plan, which the lawsuit claims has caused some of Illinois consumers’ natural gas bills to more than double. CUB first made the charges of deceptive practices against the Naperville, IL-based company in April (see Daily GPI, April 12).
